Any automotive A/C system can be serviced and recharged using manifold gauges, a vacuum pump and some method to measure or weigh the amount of refrigerant being charged into a system. Although this method is effective, more automated systems have been developed in order to save the service technicians time and provide a single work station to perform all functions. Known as charging stations, they will typically be made as a portable unit that is equipped with manifold gauges, a charging cylinder to measure the amount of refrigerant, a vacuum pump, a storage area for the refrigerant supply tank, auxiliary gauges plus control valves and plumbing to connect all the components.

Typically, the charging station should make the job of recharging easier and require less involvement of the service technician because of automatic shut of switches and controls. However, keep in mind that the integrity of the charging station is only as good as each of the components. In every case, charging stations still require pressure gauge calibration from time to time and regular service and oil changes on the vacuum pump.

Although often considered a time saver and a customer pleaser, the more automated and electronically controlled the charge stations also include electronic circuits, circuit boards and time controlled switches that can fail, leaving an A/C technician crippled in the heat of the season. Overall, regardless of the automation or degree of hands free operation, the charging stations perform the exact same function as the manifold gauge set and vacuum pump, but they eliminate a lot of the service technicians control.
