Bowden Cable
Auto A/C and heater controls were typically connected from the dashboard control head to other components using a bowden cable. The bowden cable is a unique design because it includes a metal cable or wire inside of a metal or rubber housing. The external housing is secured in different spots allowing the inner cable to slide and move freely.
Bowden cables were used as a mechanical remote control for such operations as temperature or blend doors or heater control valves.
On current vehicle production, most applications for bowden cables have been replaced with electric servo motors or other similar controls.
